Liverpool emerges victorious in the first Merseyside Derby of the 2025-26 Premier League season after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Everton at Anfield. Arne Slot‘s side got an early lead when Ryan Gravenberch scored in the 10th minute of the match.
After the goal, the Reds seemed to be in quite an attacking mood. Despite David Moyes‘ Everton having decent spells in between themselves, every time Liverpool pressed, they looked like scoring. Momentum shifted a bit more in favor of the hosts when Hugo Ekitike scored in the 29th minute of the game.
The summer signing doubled his side’s lead, turning a meticulous ball from Gravenberch into a sleek finish past Jordan Pickford. The goal was Ekitike’s third goal in the Premier League this season. From there on, Everton really pushed on to at least get a goal before the half-time whistle.
However, a breakthrough came for the Toffees in the second half of the match. David Moyes’ side was finally able to break the deadlock through a 58th-minute Idrissa Gueye goal.
Everton did look threatening in stages after pulling one back in, but there always lingered a threat of a third and decisive Liverpool goal.
As things panned out, the game ended with a scoreline of 2-1 in Liverpool’s favor. With the win over Everton, Arne Slot’s side currently sit top of the 2025-26 Premier League table. Liverpool has 5 wins in their first 5 matches of this season.
Alexander Isak makes his Premier League debut for Liverpool

Summer signing Alexander Isak came on in the 67th minute against Everton to make his Premier League debut for Liverpool. The Swiss international joined the Reds this summer in a record transfer from Newcastle United. Isak did look sharp in the closing stages of the game.
With Hugo Ekitike in fine goal-scoring knick, it will be interesting to witness how Arne Slot handles Isak’s game time at Liverpool.
The Reds will now face Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) at Anfield on Tuesday, September 23. After that, a trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League lies ahead.
