UCL matchday 2 saw Jose Mourinho‘s return to Stamford Bridge to face his former English Premier League club, Chelsea. The Portuguese manager with his new club Benfica, was expected to spring a surprise and possibly spoil the Blues’ Champions League run.

However, it didn’t turn out to be the case. Enzo Maresca‘s Chelsea managed to register a 1-0 win over Benfica in MD2 of the 2025-26 UCL campaign. Benfica played well in parts. But Richard Rios‘ own goal in the 18th minute of the game from the visitors proved enough for Chelsea to see out the Portuguese side.

Chelsea saw more of the ball than Mourinho’s Benfica. However, both clubs had a similar number of 3 shots on target. The win gives the Blues all three points and helps them get off the mark in the 2025-26 UCL standings.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool were hopeful of a return to form in the UCL against Turkish club Galatasaray. Especially after a damaging defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League. However, the result didn’t go the Reds’ way as they slumped to a slender 1-0 defeat.

Victor Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty proved enough for the hosts to see out Liverpool and secure all three points. Arne Slot’s team seemed to have a lifeline when they were awarded a late penalty. However, a VAR check resulted in an overturn of the penalty decision.

The Reds huffed and huffed in the closing stages of the match. But it wasn’t a night they will like to remember. Liverpool now has 1 win and 1 loss in their 2025-26 UCL campaign so far. However, there lies a lingering concern. Despite having almost double the percentage of possession to Galatasaray, Slot’s side failed to make it count.

The Reds will be hoping for a quick return to winning ways. However, their next set of fixtures can prove to be a litmus test. Arne Slot’s team will next face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Then, after the international break, they will host Man United at Anfield. Followed by their UCL MD3 fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park.
