Tottenham win against Man City as Palhinha and Johnson score

Tottenham defeats Man City at Etihad as Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha score

Tottenham Hotspur make it two wins in a row in their first couple of Premier League games for the 2025-26 season. Thomas Frank‘s side defeated Pep Guardiola‘s Man City at Etihad by a scoreline of 0-2 to go top of the league table with 6 points to their name.

Brennan Johnson scored the first goal for Spurs against City in the 35th minute when he tapped in a good grounded cross from Richarlison. With Tottenham applying high press on Man City’s defense, City’s goalkeeper James Trafford succumbed under pressure as he was caught in possession by Richarlison.

However, after the Brazilian couldn’t turn it in himself, midfielder Joao Palhinha was quick to analyze the situation and turned in the deflection himself to put Thomas Frank’s side 0-2 up on the brink of halftime.

A promising start for Tottenham in the 2025-26 Premier League season

It’s still early days in the 2025-26 Premier League season, but it’s two back-to-back wins and two clean sheets for Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur. Moreso, they have scored a total of 5 goals in their first 2 games of the season.

On the other hand, Pep Guardiola’s Man City didn’t look quite at their best against Spurs. Pep’s men delivered a five-star performance against Wolves and looked dangerous. However, that wasn’t the case when they turned up against Tottenham for their first home game of the season.

Despite having a notable chunk of possession against Spurs, City’s number of shots and shots on target were less than those of Spurs. It’s still early days into the season. But the way Thomas Frank has started his reign at Spurs, things do look promising at this stage.

It’s just over a week to go in the 2025 summer transfer window. It will be interesting to find out what quality Spurs can add to their squad. The pain of losing the transfer battle to Arsenal for Eberechi Eze might be slightly eased today after the performances of Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentacur, and Pape Matar Sarr against Man City.
