The Girlfriend surprises with a strong opening episode

The Girlfriend did manage to build up some sort of buzz before its official release on September 10 at Prime Video. Running through six episodes, the psychological thriller primarily stars Bates Motel and House of the Dragon fame Olivia Cooke alongside Robin Wright and Laurie Davidson.

It was quite evident from the trailer of The Girlfriend that this adaptation of Michelle Francis‘ novel, going by the same name, has the potential to emerge as a successful miniseries/show. Adding to it, the way the makers have adapted the novel stands out.

The pacing, narrative, story mapping, cinematography, performances, and everything look to be bang on point and surpass expectations in the first episode of the series itself. Olivia Cooke, playing the character of Cherry, looks to be on the path to deliver one of her career-best performances so far.

Robin Wright, who is also one of the executive producers and directors of the show, captures the screen and hooks your attention from the word go. She has played her character, Laura, the mother of Danny (played by Laurie Davidson), with an apt amount of maturity. One of the stealing points of the show, coming out from the opening episode, is its raw appeal and on-screen freshness.

The Girlfriend Episode 1 is engaging and thrilling

The chemistry between Olivia Cooke and Laurie Davidson emerges as one of the bright elements of The Girlfriend series. Also, it’s quite pleasing to reveal that this psychological thriller from its first episode has managed to show enough thrills, chills, and plot twists to keep a viewer hooked and wanting more.

There is a touch of sensual/erotic element that combines well with the on-screen tension and unexpected turns of events. This blend also manages to conjure up a certain sense of involvement for the audience. To add to it, the series’ edge-of-the-seat plot is engaging to the core.

The music and background score add a bit of funkiness to the screenplay. It further enhances the impact of the story. If all these can be inferred from only the first episode of The Girlfriend, imagine what lies ahead in this twisty, hot, and fast-paced psychological thriller.
