The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone in the lead, has managed to grab some sort of momentum at the US box office. Despite facing tough competition from Avatar: Fire and Ash, the psychological mystery thriller has managed decent footfalls throughout its first weekend and then went on to have a stable 1st Monday and Tuesday as well.

The movie brought in an opening weekend number of around $19.01 million at the domestic box office. The erotic mystery thriller cashed in on the holiday season as the 1st weekday of Monday resulted in a return of about $3.4 million. The Tuesday boost was evident as The Housemaid collected around $3.7 million. Collectively, now after its first five days at the North American box office, the Paul Feig-directed movie stands at a sum of $26.11 million (via Box Office Mojo).

A lot will depend on how this Sydney Sweeney starrer flick will finish its 1st week at the domestic box office. The Christmas period could help the movie to bring in substantial numbers on its 1st Wednesday. At the current pace, the first week might end at approximately $32 million – $34.5 million.

Critical & Audience Reception For The Housemaid Could Propel Steady Box Office Numbers

Now of course, things could have been better for the mystery thriller at the domestic box office had it not clashed with Avatar: Fire and Ash. However, what stood against The Housemaid was the other 19 December release, David, also performing quite well at the domestic box office with an opening weekend collection in the range of $22 million and a first five days haul of approximately $29.91 million.

One thing that might work in favor of The Housemaid and provide it some sort of steady/long-term momentum at the domestic box office is that a moderate to good critical and audience reception for the movie. Further adding to it, having a very audience frenzy star cast could also spread any positive buzz surrounding the movie faster, especially things like online reviews and word of mouth.

Predicting the box office path ahead for the psychological mystery thriller might be a little too early at this moment. However, films that usually open in this sort of corridor require overseas/international gross to tip themselves over the $100 million mark. Their domestic overhaul are most likely to wrap up around $70 million – $80 million.

The Housemaid is yet to witness its all-around international release.
