Thomas Frank confirmed as the new manager of Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Thomas Frank as their new manager. The 51-year-old Danish head coach will replace Ange Postecoglou at the Premier League club. The former Brentford manager was among several other names like Marco Silva (Fulham) and Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), reportedly on the shortlist of the Spurs’ hierarchy.
It seems like his impressive tactical nuances at Brentford since they won the promotion back to the Premier League in 2021, and a solid finish to the 2024-25 campaign, have landed Thomas Frank the managerial reign at Spurs.
Will Thomas Frank play his preferred formation at Tottenham?
Thomas Frank likes playing attacking formations as in 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. The Danish manager has given Brentford an identity, where they have been known for switching from back to front in the blink of an eye, seizing those counter-attacking opportunities.
The good thing for Spurs is that most of their players are used to the 4-2-3-1 formation. It is what they mostly played under former manager Ange Postecoglou. So, the process of adapting to the new manager’s tactics might not be that complicated for the squad. It is likely that Thomas Frank will go with a back 4 formation at Tottenham when he begins his reign at the North London-based club.
However, there is one big difference between Ange Postecoglou’s playing style and Thomas Frank’s one. Under Postecoglou, Spurs were quite open at the back. They were pretty much susceptible to opponents’ counterattacks or a sudden high ball targeted towards their defense.
With Thomas Frank, Tottenham might be able to improve on their defensive flaws. During his time at Brentford, the Danish manager is known for having a compact and tight defense. Under him, the Bees were masters at soaking up the pressure spells and an opportunity-driven attacking style of play.
Managing Champions League and Premier League football together
It will be the first time in his coaching career that Thomas Frank will be managing a club in the UCL. Under Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham ended their 17-year-long European Trophy drought. The club did it by winning the UEFA Europa League 2024-25. This secured them a spot in the 2025-26 UCL campaign.
In his new reign at Spurs, Thomas Frank will have to juggle the Premier League football and the UCL together in the 2025-26 season. There lingers a general sense of doubt among the club’s supporters about how this could turn out after Spurs’ latest injury dilemmas while managing two competitions in the 2024-25 season.
The 2025 summer transfer window gives the North London club an opportunity to add quality to their squad. This window could indeed prove to be very crucial for the club, if they want a turnaround, especially in the domestic form for the 2025-26 season. It remains to be seen how much the Spurs’ board backs Thomas Frank in his new position at the club.
