Man United are now coming closer to potentially securing personal terms with Premier League rivals Wolves’ forward Matheus Cunha. The talented 25-year-old Brazilian has been on the transfer radar of some of the top clubs in England. Alongside Man United, teams like Arsenal, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Liverpool have all been linked with the player.
As per football transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Man United are currently in the driving seat to get a potential summer transfer for Matheus Cunha over the line.
On his official ‘X’ account, Romano wrote – “Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing. Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd are aware of more clubs keen. Good feelings after initial contacts between Cunha and MUFC.”
Sky Sports has also hinted that Cunha is ‘keen’ on joining the Red Devils. It’s crucial to recall that Cunha signed a new contract with Wolves a short time ago, extending his stay at the club until June 2029.
However, as per numerous reports, his contract has a release clause of around £62.5 million. Any club that looks to sway the Wolves’ number 10 away from Molineux must meet the very specific valuation.
Matheus Cunha’s numbers for Wolves and what he can add to Ruben Amorim’s Man United
Matheus Cunha has 21 goal contributions (15 goals and 6 assists) in 29 Premier League matches for Wolves in the 2024-25 season so far. The Brazilian also had 2 FA Cup goals to his name this season for Wolves in the same number of matches played in the competition. The Old Gold’s talisman, however, had no goals or assists in his single Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) outing this season.
There is a mutual sense of feeling among the Wolves’ supporters and hierarchy that the 25-year-old is likely to leave in the upcoming summer transfer window. Despite the player’s recent social media antics causing a stir in the club’s fan base, even they realise how crucial his contributions have been in Wolves surviving the relegation battle with as many as 5 games to go in the season.
However, if Matheus Cunha does secure a Man United move in the summer window, Ruben Amorim would have a player in his hands who can single-handedly change games.
Cunha can create chances from open play. He also possesses that ball-carrying threat that can trouble any opposition’s defenders. The Brazilian forward surely has pace in his game, but his finishing is something that has caught the eye in recent times.
